These represent a fraction of what we regard, in today's technologically evolved world, as TECHNOLOGICALLY SIMPLE covert electronic audio and video monitoring devices. Variations of similar devices also have built-in radio transmitters, so that recorded images and communication can be monitored in real-time from a remote location. How "remote" depends on the strength of the radio transmitters built into them and/or the number of remote radio signal receivers and boosters installed between the location of the room/telephone line being monitored, and the remote location used for real-time monitoring. It can also get a lot more complicated than this when you add the likes of systems integration and computer hackers to the mix, which is too complex to explain here.

• Technology development has made the installation and use of covert electronic audio and video eavesdropping easy. No special skill is required.
• Technology development has made counter-electronic surveillance complex, for a number of reasons:
  • If such devices are not active (ie. they have no power), they cannot be detected with even the most sophisticated counter-electronic surveillance detection equipment. The implication is that the only way to find them is a physical serach - but then you have to know what to look for.
  • If the device is of the type that transmits video and audio to a remote location for real-time monitoring,  the only reliable manner to defeat them is to install a signal jamming device in the room in which sensitive communication is taking place. But then you need to know what form of transmission is being used to comprehensively manage the risk.
  • If the device is of a type that does not transmit the video and audio for real-time monitoring, the only reliable manner to defeat them is to install some form of "white noise" generator in the room where sensitive communication is taking place.
• Covert electronic surveillance devices and electronic counter-covert electronic surveillance devices live in a constant race to defeat each other. If a device can be built to defeat a covert electronic surveillance device, a new covert surveillance device can be built that will defeat the technology of counter-covert electronic surveillance devices.
• The only thing standing between successful and unsuccessful covert electronic surveillance is the amount of money that those needing to covertly survey an environment are prepared to spend. And there is a vast difference between the technology that is available to anyone when compared with the technology that is available to government/state intelligence agencies/specialist private electronic surveillance intelligence service providers.
• The few items depicted above is a tiny sample of what is available. Covert TRACKING DEVICES (that can be covertly attached to Anything), CELLPHONE CLONING SOFTWARE and MONITORING DEVICES, COVERT COMPUTER MONITORING SOFTWARE and DEVICES, TELEPHONE COMMUNICATION and EMAIL INTERCEPTION DEVICES, PARABOLIC MICROPHONES and IMAGING DEVICES that can literally see and hear through most physical obstacles are other categories of covert surveillance risks to be considered.
• The implication is that to defeat covert electronic monitoring requires a comprehensive assessment of the risk of such activity. It is this risk assessment that informs the counter-covert electronic surveillance expert to determine what kind of technology might be used, and counter-surveillance measures can be applied accordingly.
